What it is
A great deal of shoulder-region pain actually comes from the neck and the muscles that control the shoulder blade. Desk work, driving and stress all contribute, and the pattern of pain often mimics a shoulder problem.
How it usually presents
- Aching across the top of the shoulder and between the shoulder blades
- Pain that changes with neck position
- Headaches at the base of the skull
How it is assessed
Examination of the neck and shoulder together, to establish which structure reproduces your symptoms.
Treatment options
- Physiotherapy for posture, mobility and shoulder blade control
- Workstation and activity advice
- Onward referral to a spinal colleague when the neck is the primary source
Non-surgical treatment is considered first wherever it is reasonable. Which option suits you depends on your symptoms, your goals and what you want from treatment, which is exactly what we discuss in clinic.
