Pectoralis major rupture

A chest muscle tear, most often during heavy bench pressing.

What it is

The pectoralis major tendon can tear where it attaches to the upper arm, usually during a heavy eccentric load such as lowering a bench press. Early diagnosis matters, because repair is more straightforward in the first few weeks.

How it usually presents

  • A sudden tearing sensation with bruising across the chest and arm
  • A change in the contour of the chest, with loss of the front fold of the armpit
  • Weakness pushing and pressing

How it is assessed

Clinical examination and MRI to confirm the site and extent of the tear.

Treatment options

  • Surgical repair, particularly for active people and complete tears
  • Non-surgical management with rehabilitation for partial tears or lower demand

Non-surgical treatment is considered first wherever it is reasonable. Which option suits you depends on your symptoms, your goals and what you want from treatment, which is exactly what we discuss in clinic.
